A FortiToken is a code generator that generates a unique code for authentication. When this feature is enabled, the user must enter this code in addition to the username and password. The FortiGate appliance then verifies the FortiToken code in combination with username and password. This form of authentication can be used, for example, to set up a VPN connection, for administration access or to use a WLAN portal. Other options for this type of authentication include sending an e-mail or an SMS to the user logging in. In this case, the codes contained therein must be entered in addition to the login.

For particularly secure environments, the FortiToken 300, a USB smart card token for PKI infrastructures, is a good choice. It offers one-time passwords and encryption via a hardware chip in combination with client software. The latter is available for Windows, Linux and MacOS. Microsoft CAPI and PKCS#11 APIs are supported. The licence is - as with the other Fortinet token solutions - a one-time licence, so no further costs are incurred.
In addition to hardware tokens, FortiToken- Mobile allows iOS and Android devices to be used as tokens. This OATH-compatible solution offers a time-based one-time password procedure and relieves the user of the need to use an additional device (HW token). Due to the dynamic generation of token seeds and their encrypted transmission and storage, this procedure is significantly more secure than comparable methods. The FortiToken-Mobile can be used with the FortiGate appliances as well as with the FortiAuthenticator authentication solution and can therefore be used universally. It is based on a one-time licence, which eliminates the need for repeated licensing and thus saves costs. Each FortiGate appliance from FOS5 onwards offers the free use of two FortiToken-Mobiles, e.g. for admin accounts.
