Increasingly important (!) : OT security in times of digitalisation
Technologie, Cyberangriffe, Zero Trust
With increasing digitalisation, more and more industrial systems are being networked and connected to the internet. This brings many advantages, such as improved remote monitoring and control of processes. At the same time, however, the risk of cyber attacks on these systems is increasing. To counter these threats, the importance of OT security is growing.
OT systems are used in industrial production to automate and optimise processes. They control machines, monitor processes and ensure the distribution of energy, water or gas. However, these systems have often been in use for years and were developed at a time when cybersecurity did not play a major role. Accordingly, they are often outdated and vulnerable to attacks.
The networking of OT systems with the internet increases the risk of cyber attacks even further. Hackers can try to penetrate the system to steal data or disrupt operations. This can lead to serious consequences, such as production downtime, damage to machinery or even endangerment of human life.
To counteract these threats, it is important that companies integrate OT security into their strategies. This first involves a risk analysis to identify vulnerabilities in the system. These vulnerabilities must then be addressed by updating outdated operating systems and software and replacing them with more modern and secure systems.
Additionally, OT systems should be placed in a separate network segment to avoid direct access from outside. Access controls should only be granted to authorised persons and all activities should be monitored and logged. Staff should be trained regularly to be aware of the risks and how to respond to threats.
Finally, OT systems should also be protected with specially developed security software that is tailored to the specific requirements of these systems. This software should be regularly updated to detect and defend against the latest threats.
In summary, OT security is becoming increasingly important in times of digitalisation. Companies need to be aware that they are a target for cyber attacks and take proactive measures to protect their OT systems. This is the only way they can reap the benefits of digitalisation without jeopardising the security of their systems.
